On September 7, 1813, the United States government begins
using the nickname “Uncle Sam”. A man from New York named Sam Wilson packed
beef that was sent to US Soldiers. He stamped the packages with the letters U S
for United States. The soldiers began referring to the meat as “Uncle Sam’s”.
Uncle Sam is usually seen with a white beard and wearing a top hat and striped
clothing.
