Parent Letter for September 18th

September 18, 2012

Dear Parents,

We are off to a great start in 5th grade. I am enjoying teaching your child. Here are some things we are learning about so far. In Math, we studied Volume for the first weeks and now we are working on place value of whole numbers and decimals. In Science we are studying genetics, inherited traits, and learned behaviors. Soon we will start ecosystems. In Reading, we are studying the book Hatchet. Ask your child to tell you about what has happened to Brian so far. In Social Studies we have been discussing Native Americans and Explorers.

Some important information you need to know:

1. Thanks to those who have paid already for our field trips. There is still plenty of time, as our first trip isn’t until December.

2. We are still in need of 2-Liter bottles!! Please send these in if you have any. Rinse with water, and leave the labels and lids on them.

3. South Fork is collecting Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels. Send these in as well.
4. Do you have a Parent Assist password? Parent Assist is a program the school district has created that gives you access to your child’s grades. Go to www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us From the main page, on the left hand side, you will see Parent Assist. Click there for the log-in screen. To get your user name, you must come by South Fork and see the ladies in the office. Parent Assist can be used with students as young as 3rd grade and all the way to the high school level.

5. Have you visited my webpage? Go to the school system's website. From the top left, choose South Fork school. From the South Fork page, choose faculty webpages and then select my name. You can also visit our class blog. My blog will have posts about things we are doing in school as well as fun facts about “Today in History” and cloud pictures. I will post parent letters here as well.
6. I am sending home a Scholastic book order form for September. If you choose, there is now an online parent purchase option. See the attached letter for more information on that and for our class code. There is a special bonus if you order online---a free book pick! Online orders as well as orders sent to school earn us rewards I can use to get new books for the classroom. If you choose to order and pay me, send cash or check made to SCHOLASTIC by Friday, September 28th.
7. Have you asked your child about our Dancing Classroom??

8.  Next week we are having Curriculum Night.  K-2 is Monday at 6:30pm, grades 3-5 are Thursday at 6:30pm. Make plans now to attend our event on Thursday night to hear all about what we will be doing in 5th grade.
Thanks to all of you for making this the best Back-To-School I’ve had in my 10 years of teaching!
I appreciate your support!

Parent Letter for 11/15/11

Dear Parents,

Here are some things you need to know for the coming weeks.

1. Your child brought home the “Treasure Card” fundraiser information last week. Each card packet sells for $20. Please help our school raise some needed money by participating in this. If you do not wish to sell, please return all 5 card packs back as soon as possible. The next turn in day for money is this Thursday.

2. Join us for Science Night on Thursday evening from 6:30 until 7:30 pm. Science boards for the upcoming Science fair will be sold at a reduced price of $2 per board. After this evening, they will be sold for $3. Both prices are significantly cheaper than what you will find in the stores!

3. There is no school next week, Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday!

4. We had a vision screening today. I will send the results home as soon as I get them. Several students who already have glasses are not wearing them in class. If your child already has glasses, please speak to them of the importance of wearing their glasses!!

Thank you for supporting your child’s education.

Parent Letter for August 30th

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a great 5th grade year. The students are off to a great start and we have PBIS to thank. PBIS is our new "Positive Behavior" system we are using at South Fork this year. There will be a special parent meeting one night in the near future so parents can learn all about this program. Ask your child what it means to have PRIDE.

We have started a whole class study of the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. Most students will be reading this with me, while a few students will be working with our Primary Reading Teacher, Miss Dalton. ESL class should be starting really soon as well. In math, we are reviewing adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We are switching classes with Miss Colhoun, who will teach our class science while I teach her class math. Right now they are discussing weather, especially the hurricanes.

Some things you need to know:
  • We need clean, rinsed, 2-liter soda bottles for an upcoming science unit. Please keep the labels and lids on the bottles and send to school with your student.
  • We are still collecting Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels
  • Do you have a Parent Assist log-in and password? You can access your child's grades, attendance, and personal info. This same password works for your middle school and high school age students as well. See Mrs. Rybak in the school office for more information.
  • $5.50 is needed for Scholastic News magazine subscription. Thanks to those who have already paid!
  • Some students still have not brought in their school supplies. Please send these in ASAP!
I'm so glad you visited my blog. We will be using this quite a bit in the upcoming school year.  Please feel free to leave a comment.
