This past Monday, we had the Woodwind Quintet of the Winston-Salem Symphony come to our school for a special presentation. We heard them play several songs and each performer told us about the instrument that he or she plays.

Percussion Assembly
Yesterday, we had some members of the Percussion unit of the Winston-Salem Symphony come to our school and demonstrate their instruments. They brought several types of drums (including some from West Africa). They had triangles, wood blocks, cymbals, and the marimbas. It was very interesting to hear all the different kinds of songs they could play just using these instruments.
It will be very exciting to hear the entire symphony play when we go to the Mary Starling Concert in the spring. It is always one of my favorite parts of 5th grade.

Peter and the Wolf
On Wednesday, a group of students from the North Carolina School of the Arts came to our school and did a performance of Peter and the Wolf. The students danced ballet and were very talented. In this play, each character is represented by a different instrument. For example, the bird was a flute, and the cat was a clarinet. Peter was represented by a violin. Some of these students were as young as 8th grade.
One thing I thought was really neat was how each dance introduced his or her character. The narrator would tell which instrument represented them, and then they would dance a few steps. But what I thought was special was when the boy who played the wolf came out onstage. He started dancing at first without his mask. Then he stopped in the middle of the stage and made a big production of putting on the wolf mask, and then looking up at the students. I don't know if this was really part of the show, or something he did on his own. Either way, I thought it was a neat way to show all the young students that he wasn't scary!
I thought these young people did a wonderful job and the performance was absolutely magical! I can't remember the last time we had an assembly where all 523 students were totally entertained!!

Carolina Ballet Program
Today we had some dancers from the Carolina Ballet Company in Raleigh come to speak at our school. Jan and Richie were the dancers. They told us the stories of how they became dancers. Jan started dancing at age 3, got asked to dance in New York City, and while she was there, was spotted by a dance master from the Carolina Ballet and offered a position. Richie is originally from the country of Hungary (that's in Europe.) His parents were both ballet dancers, so he naturally became one himself. He moved to America as a teenager, and while visiting dancer friends in Raleigh, was spotted by a dance master and was also offered a position with Carolina Ballet.
They talked to us about their practice routines, how they stay in such good shape, and how they learn to work together, even with people they might not like. They also showed us dance steps and even invited students on stage to demonstrate the steps. Congrats to Emerald, Miajia, and Chabely, who were brave enough to go on stage and demonstrate jumps and leaps!
Now, my question for you....were you paying attention?? At the end, some students came up and asked questions. I will post the questions that the students asked the dancers. Do you remember the answers?
1. What do the dancers do if they trip?
2. Is ballet like ice skating? Explain.
3. Have they ever performed somewhere else in the world besides NC?
Post the answers to these questions in the comments section.

The Brass Ensemble
Today we had an assembly for the fourth and fifth graders. The Brass Ensemble from our city's symphony orchestra came today to put on a mini-concert for the students. The symphony does this every year in anticipation of the concert they put on for all the fifth grade students in the entire city.
Today was the Brass group. The Strings came earlier in the school year. I enjoy these musical assemblies, mostly because I played clarinet in middle and high school. I enjoy hearing the different groups.
There were some parts of the program I think stood out to the students. They liked seeing how each instrument played its notes. They enjoyed seeing which instrument could play the lowest notes.
I think the best part was when the musicians demonstrated the different types of mutes. A mute is the piece the musician puts into the bell of the instrument in order to change the sound of the notes. I never knew this, but the role of the "teacher" on Charlie Brown was played by a trombone with a mute in it!

Friday was a different sort of day
Yesterday was definitely not your typical Friday.
For starters, we had a 2-Hour Delay due to a very light dusting of snow. Amazing, since it isn't even Thanksgiving! That right there made for a different kind of day. We still managed to get a lot of work done. I am so proud of how my students are able to "go with the flow" when our schedule gets out of the routine.
We also had a special assembly for 1st Quarter Awards. Mrs. Spencer talked to the students about the importance of being in school each day and doing your best work. She encouraged those who did not receive an award to try to earn one next time.
I would like to say a special congratulations to all the students in our class who received an award!
