Today's event happened 45 years ago.
On August 30, 1967,
Thurgood Marshall became the first African-American confirmed as a Supreme
Court Justice. A judge on the Supreme Court is appointed by the President and
remains a judge until they retire or die. Thurgood Marshall was on the Supreme
Court for 24 years and then retired for health reasons.
